Having the right board is essential to the success of a beginning surfer.  Those who are just beginning to learn the skills of surfing would have a hard time on those thin narrow boards you see the surf stars riding.  While they may look cool they make learning very difficult.  The tips in this article can help you pick the best board for you when you are first starting out. 

When you are first learning how to surf chances are your board will take a beating.  It does not make sense to spend a lot on a fancy board which is just going to get all scratched up.  A less expensive board can be just as good for a beginner as a more expensive one.  Don’t worry so much about how the board looks.  While it is fine to buy a board which has some small dings or is starting to yellow stay away from boards which show any of the foam or delimitation.   

The masters of surfing will usually have small, narrow surfboards.  The thing is you are not a mater yet.  The best board for you will give you the flotation you need so that paddling is easy.  While the correct size surfboard for you will depend on your size the best boards for the average size beginner will be around seven feet long, 19-21 inches wide, and 2-3 inches thick.  The surfboard you select should be around a foot taller than you are.
